The Sarod is a Lute made from one piece of carved wood, the neck is fretless and the bridge is seated on a skin stretched on the body of the instrument. The instrument has many strings, some are played, some are drones and others are sympathetic strings which gently resonate to the music. The number of strings and tuning varies amongst players and styles but the played strings are always stopped with the nails of the left hand and plucked with a coconut wood plectrum held in the right hand. The sound produced is full and warm with an Eastern characteristic.
The Sarod is a popular Indian classical instrument which developed from the Rabab and was first introduced around 200 years ago. . |
